Gardening Tips

  • Japanese Beetles.   They are out and they are devouring everything in sight. Japanese beetles should be dealt with on 2 fronts.

    • To help protect the plants you have from getting eaten, you need to spray them with Bayer Power Force or 3in1 Insect, Disease, and Mite Control. Another popular spray for Japanese Beetles is Sevin. You should also hang a Japanese Beetle Trap. Do not hang it in your plants. Place it 50 to 100 feet away from the plants you are trying to protect. The trap draws the beetles to it using a pheromone. Therefore, you want to use it to draw the beetles away from your plants, not toward them.

    • Japanese Beetles main purpose for emerging at this time of year is to mate. They will lay eggs, which will become this falls and next springs grub population. If you apply Bayer Season Long Grub Control right now you will kill off 90% or better of these grubs right as they hatch. Therefore, by applying the grub control now, you will head off a future grub problem as well as reduce the number of beetles that will emerge in your yard next summer.

  • Ants.  There seems to be large population of ants this year. Spot treating is the best solution. Use Bonide Ant Killer Granules as a perimeter around the foundation of you house and apply it directly to the soil surface wherever ant colonies are apparent.

  • Earwigs, Spiders, Fleas and Ticks, etc.  With abundant moisture this summer, many of the annoying bugs are finding their way into our homes. Using Bayer Complete Insect Killer for Soil and Turf as a perimeter around the house or as an application to you lawn and beds will definitely help to reduce the likelihood that they will come into your home. If they are already there, try spraying the baseboards and corners and any other likely nook and cranny with Bayer Home Pest Control Spray.

  • Mosquitoes.  This is a wetter year than in the past so the mosquito population is also up. The best way to keep from getting overrun by mosquitoes is by eliminating any standing water. Make sure you gutters are clean and walk around you property to make sure nothing is holding water (empty containers, old water in birdbaths, old tires, anything). To reduce the population that is already there, spray your yard and shrubs with Bonide Mosquito Beater. After spraying, in order to keep your neighbors mosquitoes out of your yard, try applying Bonide Mosquito Beater Granules. This is a repellent that you sprinkle on the ground.

  • Mole.  They are still very active. Applying Bonide MoleMax to your yard, you can quickly and easily drive the moles out. If your yard is really big and you just want to get rid of the moles you can use Motomco Tomcat Mole Killer. This is the best bait product on the market. It imitates a real worm, which is about 80% of a moles diet.

  • Blossom End Rot on tomatoes, peppers and even zucchini.  Applying Fast Acting Lime from Encap and Liquid Bone Meal from Rain Grow immediately would give the best chance of salvaging veggies from these plants this year.
